About Wrestling
The Ames High wrestling program is led by Andy Fecht. In the 2020-21 season, Ames qualified a pair of wrestlers to the IHSAA State Tournament, highlighted by Gabe Greenlee’s return to the heavyweight title bout for the second straight year.
Girls Wrestling
The latest wrestling squad features a young lineup of athletes but perhaps most notable, a large and still growing contingent of girls wrestlers. Just two years prior, Ames had one girl wrestler. A year later, that number grew to seven. This year 27 different girls wrestlers have practiced in the wrestling room.
Team Prospects
The top returning wrestler on either side appears to be Kyler Hall for the boys and Alexis Winkey for the girls. Hall finished just a win away from the state tournament a year ago and will move up to a more comfortable position at 285 after a 25-7 sophomore campaign at 2020. Alexis Winkey collected a pair of championship bracket wins at the IWCOA Girls State Tournament – the first Little Cyclone female wrestler to do so – before falling in the Round of 16.
Celebrating Success
Ames’ most recent state champion was Marcus Coleman, who currently wrestles at Iowa State. As a Little Cyclone, Coleman won his third state title in 2017 and finished with a 156-16 record in his prep wrestling career.
